Brief History:

Originally opened as The Green Room in 1986 as a  home for experimental art, music, comedy and theatre. it gave starts to much-loved Manchester bands like James and Doves, and leading comedians like Alan Carr, Steve Coogan, and Caroline Aherne. Undertaking a huge revamp in 2012, it’s now home to the Trof family (The Deaf Institute, Albert Hall).

How many people does it hold?

Unique Features

The stage aesthetic:

Manchester’s only venue where the walls are covered with what look like the controls from a 1950s Spacelab” – The Guardian

[ngg_images source=”galleries” container_ids=”8″ display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_basic_slideshow” gallery_width=”600″ gallery_height=”400″ cycle_effect=”fade” cycle_interval=”3″ show_thumbnail_link=”0″ thumbnail_link_text=”[Show thumbnails]” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]Who has played there?

Everything Everything, Savages, Flume, Glass Animals, tune-yards, Ibibio Sound Machine, Nitin Sawhney, Goblin as well as the highly anticipated return of Death From Above 1979.

Any “I was there” moments?

Last year Hot Chip and Roisin Murphy performed there on consecutive nights to test out their new sets before hitting the festival  circuit

How do I get there?

Take the Metrolink to either St Peters Square or Deansgate/Castlefield it’s a 5-minute walk from either stop, Train to Oxford Road Station and loads of bus services stop nearby.

Where should I eat?

Lucky for you Gorilla itself has an award winning kitchen, which churns out high-quality breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner.

If you’re feeling flush the much appreciated Volta at Refuge is around the corner in the Principle Hotel, also on Oxford Road, a lower budget recommendation would be Chilango which offers excellent Mexican food.

TicketWeb Tip:

The Toilets and a can bar are positioned behind the stage so if you’re close to the stage you can make a double pronged refreshment pit stop without missing too much… you often bump into the artist’s post-performance in that area.Wherever you stand in the venue you get a good view and feel of the action.

Where can you carry on the party?

Gorilla do some killer cocktails in their own right, they also have a gin parlour and often there is an aftershow DJ, keeping the session going into the wee hours of the morning.
