New Music: Norma Jean Martine

Norma Jean Martine is a serious talent. The London living American has been making waves with every new track she’s dropped, and if she continues on this path, is about to embark on one hell of a career. Here’s what you need to know.

At the tail end of last year, the singer/songwriter dropped her debut single “Animals”, piquing the interests of key tastemakers and introducing Norma to the world.  “Animals” is as soulful as anything you’re likely to hear this year and catchy as hell. It grabs you from the intro and won’t let you go for three and a half minutes. Don’t believe me? Listen for yourself below.

Her latest single “No Gold” is also a triumph and the accompanying video is very special. A soon as the video starts, Norma gently sings “I’m going home” to accompanying images of her hometown, as the camera pans across the suburbs of the town she grew up in, you’re genuinely intrigued. You want to know more about her backstory. There’s an overriding theme of authenticity about her art. Everything Norma does is created by her, for her. The anthesis of the Simon Cowell American Idol world that once had the audacity to reject Norma, for reasons only known to the high-trousered one.

With a London headline show booked and a handful of festival appearances over the summer, 2016 looks like it’s going to end nicely for the New Yorker turned Londoner. The only question we have is, can we have some more music soon please?
