The world is getting smaller. Thanks to a little-known invention called the internet, it’s now possible to find your new favourite artist, discover everything about them and download their entire back catalogue onto your phone almost immediately. Never in my life did I think I’d discover an ace new band from Aarhus in Denmark, but low and behold, somehow Lowy’s excellent single “Deer Eyes” ended up in my headphones and I’m glad it did.
“Deer Eyes” is a 4-minute slice of Scandinavian dream-pop, combining glistening synth sounds with an instantly memorable vocal line. The track, the band’s first release on the influential independent Bella Union (Beach House, Father John Misty) label was included in a Guardian round-up of the ‘Five must-listen to new tracks from around the world’. Check out the recently released visuals for the track below.
Delve into Lowly’s back catalogue and you’ll discover a band that aren’t afraid to experiment with their sound. Although they only formed in 2014, the band have released several singles that have captured the imagination of various tastemakers and been streamed thousands of times across the globe. Their first release “Daydreamers” is as dreamy as its name suggests and “S.W.I.M”, which you can watch the videos for below is a personal favourite. One of Lowly’s real strengths is their lyrics which are often both poignant and melancholy. A particularly impressive feat for artists for whom English is presumably a second language.
It’s still early days for Lowly, but with a debut album pencilled in for next year and more and more live dates being added all the time, 2017 is looking like an exciting prospect for the Danish noise-pop quintet.
