New Music: James Hersey

Meet the Vienna-born slickster who has become a streaming sensation almost overnight. James Hersey’s vocal and songwriting skill have proved irresistible, not only to fans but to influential electronic artists too.

Music has been the focus of James Hersey’s life from a very young age; his childhood was filled with acoustic guitar lessons, hippy drum circles, Cypress Hill and Michael Jackson. In his teens, James went from being in the school choir to playing the drums in a Punk Rock band. All of these early influences have produced a well-rounded twenty-eight-year-old artist, who is on the brink of the big time thanks to his talent as a singer-songwriter.

Hersey’s summer flavoured tune “Coming Over” was picked up by a few DJ’s and remixed, thrusting the song into the forefront of the Dance arena. Filous initiated this and his remix of “Coming Over” has over 28 million streams on Spotify. Get it in your ears and see what all the fuss is about:

It didn’t stop there, more House heavyweights and Dance dynamos got involved with the track and James Hersey has become a wanted man. Kygo & Dillon Francis created a subtle rework of “Coming Over” and this has been streamed over 74 million times. Not bad right? Its success has led to Dance legend Tiesto offering up a remix and Hersey touring Europe with Kygo himself.

Amazing what you can do with a well-written song in the modern music industry. This rapid success is far from a one-off, flash in the pan situation. Hersey clearly has a special voice, but it’s how he utilises it through his clever songwriting that has put him in the position he is currently in. Take “What I’ve Done” for example, another cool song picked up by a popular DJ. Feast put a remix together and it has been played nearly 15 million times on Spotify. Check it out:

“Miss You” is James Hersey’s official debut single and it undoubtedly has an electronic-friendly feel to it. Listening to the superb song is certainly satisfying, so much so that yet another Dance act – Honne, have jumped on board the Hersey hype train and remixed the single. James’ original has 11 million plays on Spotify and it’s easy to see why:

The awe-inspiring Austrian is currently touring Europe with the London Electronic-Soul duo Honne. Lucky for you James has taken time out of his hectic schedule and is playing in London this November as part of The Great Escape’s First Fifty showcase.
