New Music: Billie Marten

Looking for emotive lyricism, enchantingly fragile vocals and an apparent mastery of melancholic melodies? Then the Yorkshire born future folk star Billie Marten is your girl. Oh, and did I mention she has just turned 18?

You will not read anything about Billie Marten that doesn’t mention her age, with good reason; she was born in 1999 for Folk’s sake. What needs to be communicated however is the fact that any established folk artist in their prime would be proud to call Billie Marten’s songs their own. There’s a palpable sense of maturity in the music and she is yet to fail to produce truly moving songs with each release. See for yourself:

The Ribbon EP was released in 2014 when Marten was only 15 years old, Since then she has released a couple of scintillating singles and another exceptional EP titled As Long As. All of this occurred over two years while Marten was completing her GCSE’s and preparing for her A-levels. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the young artist has fostered a real connection with her audience and has built a considerable fan base from such a small catalogue of songs in such a short space of time.

Billie Marten has undeniable song writing talent, the songs speak for themselves, but if you need more validation of her skills – take her debut full length “Writing of Blues and Yellows”. This came at the end of 2016 and received high praise from Kate Bush and Nick Drake among other influential singer/songwriters. Treat your ears to some of the tantalising tunes now.

Listen to the magical “Milk & Honey” below:

Check out the beautiful “Heavy Weather” it will transport you out of this world.

“La Lune” certainly keeps the “consistently captivating” theme that we have seen thus far in Marten’s music going.
