YONAKA are a Brighton-based 4-piece fronted by Theresa Jarvis and feature George Edwards on guitar, Alex Crosby on Bass/Keys and Robert Mason on Drums. Their name means ‘the dead of night’, or ‘midnight’ in Japanese. Everyday =schoolday.
This is music made to be turned up loud! Singer Theresa belts out vocals over noisy guitars and thunderous drums in a way that’s not been heard since Karen O et al were cranking out the early Yeah Yeah Yeahs recordings. If you ever thought pop music was getting a bit “nice”, then this could be right up your street. Have a chew on the anthemic Bubblegum below…
Formed in 2014 after meeting at college in Brighton, YONAKA have been building a raucous live show of in-your-face bangers. They released their debut single “Ignorance” in 2016, picking up praise from taste-makers such as DIY Magazine and Phil Taggart. Fast-forward to summer 2017 and YONAKA quickly became one of the darlings of festival season, receiving praise for their blistering sets at The Great Escape, Dot To Dot, Download, Reading + Leeds, and Citadel festivals.
The band’s latest release, the ‘Heavy’ EP dropped at the tail end of 2017 and features the aforementioned single “Bubblegum.” Produced by Mercury Prize-winning producer Rodaidh Mcdonald (King Krule, Sampha, The xx) the track has received big plays from the likes of Huw Stephens and Daniel P Carter.
