Festival Guide: The Great Escape’s First Fifty
Autumn has arrived and festival season is a distant memory... Or is it? First Fifty is here to save us from the doom and gloom.
Who?
Tank & The Bangas are basically your new favourite funk group – a spoken word soul-ensemble from New Orleans, Louisiana fronted by the electric Tarriona “Tank” Ball.
The Sound
The group fuse funk, hip hop, gospel and spoken word into a refreshingly original story telling sound that is making people sit up and pay attention. Check out new single “Quick” for a flavour…
The Story
Formed back in 2011, the group have steadily been gaining notoriety for their energetic shows in their hometown of New Orleans. Fast forward to early 2017 when out of over 6,000 entries, the group won the annual NPR Tiny Desk Contest and delivered one of the most entertaining and moving sessions to date. Their performance has garnered over 1.7 million streams to date and has been lauded by fellow artists like Chance the Rapper and Questlove. We reckon it’s 23 mins and 48 secs of perfection but you’ll only need a blast to fall head over heels in love with them. Check it footage from their winning performance below…
Essential Tracks
While we all sit impatiently waiting for their sophomore record, their debut LP ‘Think Tank’, released back in 2013, should not be missed. ‘Rollercoasters’ is a stand out track.
Where can I see them live then?
Catch Tank & The Bangas at the following tour dates.
26 February 2019 – Electric Ballroom, London
1 March 2019 – SWX, Bristol
