Introducing: Joy Crookes

South-London’s got a new pretender to the soul throne, get ready to bow down to Joy Crookes…

Joy Crookes, born and raised in Elephant and Castle.

The Sound

Amy Winehouse meets Lauryn Hill – everyone’s saying it – and they’re absolutely right, but Joy also lists Massive Attack & Nancy Sinatra as big influences. For a taste, check out the box fresh video for  “Bad Feeling” which sounds exactly like the soundtrack to a late-night blues club. Produced by Tev’n (who has previously worked with the likes of SBTRKT & Lily Allen) the track was shared by a certain Brookyln Beckham.

The Story

Joy started posting tracks online a couple of years ago. At that time her output included covers of songs by Bob Dylan and the Pogues performed via a prism of soul, alongside her own work. The transformation since those early recordings is astonishing so it’s an exciting time to see how Joy develops as an artist.

Essential Tracks

This is fresh! Beyond Bad Feeling there are only 2 other tracks currently available on Spotify! Check out the video for Sinatra below…
