Joy Crookes, born and raised in Elephant and Castle.
The Sound
Amy Winehouse meets Lauryn Hill – everyone’s saying it – and they’re absolutely right, but Joy also lists Massive Attack & Nancy Sinatra as big influences. For a taste, check out the box fresh video for “Bad Feeling” which sounds exactly like the soundtrack to a late-night blues club. Produced by Tev’n (who has previously worked with the likes of SBTRKT & Lily Allen) the track was shared by a certain Brookyln Beckham.
The Story
Joy started posting tracks online a couple of years ago. At that time her output included covers of songs by Bob Dylan and the Pogues performed via a prism of soul, alongside her own work. The transformation since those early recordings is astonishing so it’s an exciting time to see how Joy develops as an artist.
