Introducing: Jayda G

Check out the Canadian combining a love of science with disco pop.

Breaking out of the underground dance scene with her stunning debut album Significant Changes is Jayda G. Intertwining her passion for music and science, the title of the album stems from the DJ’s final thesis for her masters degree in Resource and Environmental Management, where she studied the effects of human activity on the Salish Sea killer whales in her home county of British Colombia, Canada.

The sound

Pulling inspiration from Chicago’s house scene, as well as mixing soul, funk, jazz, pop and more genres into the mix, makes Jayda G’s debut album is a fascinating listen. From the laid back grooves of tracks such as Unifying the Center and Orca’s Reprise to the enticingly energetic floor fillers Stanley’s Get Down and Move to the Front (No Parking on the DF), the debut effort firmly cements the musician’s place as one of the most exciting dance music makers on the planet right now.

The story

Born and raised six hours outside of Vancouver in the small town of Grand Forks, British Columbia, Jayda G grew up surrounded by nature. Her environment helped develop a love of science and in particular biology in the young Canadian, becoming the main focus of her studies art school and university.

Running parallel alongside her love of science was a passion for music. At the age of 5, Jayda began violin and piano lessons, and her dad introduced her to blues, Soul, funk and R&B music through his extensive record collection. Her mother fostered in the musician an early love of jazz, whilst her sister showed her the world of disco. Her brother, who worked in the Candian music industry would then send promo CDs to Jayda, from artists such as D’Angelo and TLC.

Pursuing science as a career led Jayda G to LA, where she was introduced to electronic music production for the first time. The musician transplanted to Vancouver to begin her masters degree and found herself immersed in the city’s flourishing electronic music scene. After releasing a handful of singles and collaborating with artists such as DJ Fett Burger, the DJ found herself getting booked for more and more gigs, especially in Europe.

To accommodate for her gig bookings, the musician decamped to Berlin in 2016, finishing her thesis for her masters alongside working on her debut album.  The resulting record Significant Changes received rave reviews from the likes of NME, The Guardian and Pitchfork and alongside her musical triumph, the musician also completed her masters in Resource and Environmental Management specialising in environmental toxicology.

Known for her high energy DJ performances, in February this year Jayda G completed a sold-out four-week residency at London’s Phonix.
