Festival Guide: The Great Escape’s First Fifty
Autumn has arrived and festival season is a distant memory... Or is it? First Fifty is here to save us from the doom and gloom.
New Music
Born in Melbourne & now living in Chicago, Fatai is a singer-songwriter channelling her Tongan roots via gospel influences...and her love of Disney.
The Sound
Soulful gospel influences and subtle acoustic guitars draw comparisons to Tracey Chapman but the depth of Fatai’s voice produces something akin to a stripped back Whitney Houston session. Check out her debut single Purple below…
The Story
Fatai grew up in a musical family surrounded by gospel and the music of the islands of Tonga though, as she admitted to theaureview.com she didn’t really appreciate the depth of those influences until she was older. Fatai first reached a wider audience on The Voice Australia where her rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird blew judges away. Her fan-base grew still wider when her cover of a track from Frozen was included on a Disney compilation. Empowered by these experiences Fatai moved to Chicago and self-released her debut EP Undone on which each track was recorded live in her back yard.
Essential Tracks
Fatai – Hide & Seek (Blue)
Fatai – Diamonds (Rihanna cover)
