Over the years The Underworld has become the heart of the alternative music scene in England, with The Underworld being a stepping stone for every alternative band within the industry. Little is promoted about the history of the venue, although it dates back to the opening of pub above; The Worlds End.
How many people does it hold?
Who has played there?
The Underworld has played host to concerts by such big-name artists as Foo Fighters, Bring Me The Horizon, Skrillex, The Offspring, Placebo, Queens Of The Stone Age, Radiohead, Reef, Sepultura, Sheryl Crow, Silverchair, Slash’s Snakepit, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, KT Tunstall, Suede, The Darkness, The Von Bondies, Sum 41, Fall Out Boy, Alabama 3, At The Drive-In, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Cranberries, Crazytown, The Datsuns, Frank Black, Hole, Kristin Hersh and J Mascis.
Have there been any “I was there” moments?
With so many monumental shows having been performed by the greatest acts in the rock industry over the years, we’ve no doubt.
A recent one would be Parkway Drive closing their set with “Vice” in March 2018, this was pretty special. Skip to 1min 15secs:
How do I get there?
The Underworld is straight opposite Camden Town tube stop (Northern Line Underground Station), a few minutes walk from Camden Road overground, and on many major bus routes.
Where should I eat?
Well of course in our big brother above, The World’s End! The smoked pulled pork and slaw is particularly tasty.
Where can I stay?
There are many hotels throughout Camden Town, both boutique and chain groups, from the backpacker hostel; Saint Christopher’s Inn at Belushis, to the Holiday Inn Camden Lock.
The Underworld isn’t a conventional venue shape, which gives the gig-goer choice in where to stand depending on the atmosphere they enjoy! Either down in the pit at the front, back behind the crowd or on our raised ‘balcony’ before entering the pit.
With The Underworld being such a historic building, unfortunately, one small issue we do face is accessibility, however, there are only around 15 steps down into the venue! And The Underworld are of course willing to assist when it comes to carer tickets and seated views.
Where can you carry on the party?
Right where you are. Once the show stops, The Underworld hosts club nights from 11pm – 3am in The venue on both Friday and Saturdays, and The World’s End above is open until 11pm weekdays and 1am weekends.
