Ones To Watch 2014

It’s January so before you can say “half-price sofa” it’s a sure bet you’re going to have a ton of ones-to-watch lists to wade through. Some people are going for “14 for ‘14” this year but it’s all the same musical musing and all it’s tackling the big questions. Who will be the musical superstars of 2014? Who are the names to drop and who are the names to …er, drop? Most importantly who’s playing the gigs you need to be seen at during the first bit of the year?!? No one wants to be a Johnny-come-lately so get your ears wrapped round what 2014 is offering below…

Banks 600

The artwork for her new EP basically looks like the best t-shirt Urban Outfitters never made and that’s just for starters. Banks is practically ubiquitous on the Ones-To-Watch lists this year and for good reason too – she’s rocking every frock. Check out “Waiting Game” which manages to combine Madonna, Kavinsky and 60 soul-instrumental Sliced Tomatoes in the first minute! Dark, electronic R & B is the order of the day and what a voice – rich, pained and starkly honest – somewhere between Adele and Lana Del Rey. Check out the aforementioned EP HERE.

George Ezra

When festival season comes round this year it’s all going to be about George Ezra – he’s a campfire troubadour and no mistake. Famously ditching uni in favour of writing and recording his early work, it’s a decision that’s paying off already – he’s just been named in the final 5 of BBC’s Sound of 2014 for crying out loud! A mixture of influences new and old from both sides of the Atlantic are all at work here from Dylan and Paul Simon to Billy Bragg & another TicketWeb fave, Sweet Baboo. Thankfully you don’t have to rely on our meager descriptions of George’s song-smithery, you can download Budapest for FREE right HERE.

The Amazing Snakeheads

Amazing Snake Heads 2014 - 600

Part Iggy & The Stooges, part Jerry Lee Lewis, The Amazing Snakeheads are the most exciting punk 3-piece to emerge from Glasgow’s gloriously murky depths since The Jesus & Mary Chain. Signed to the brilliant the brilliant Domino Records (home to Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Anna Calvi et al) they reside in illustrious company. Put it this way, these boys don’t pull any punches –their latest video features footage of open-heart surgery! If you think you’ve got the stomach for that you can watch it and download their blistering 1 min, 5 second opus “Testifying Time” FREE OF CHARGE right HERE.

Thumpers_2013 600

Do you like to dance? No?!? Get out…

For those of you who do wanna move your feet then you’re going to want to get a big bowl of Thumpers down yourselves. We’ve tried to categorise Thumpers and the best we’ve come up with is Euphoric-Tribal-Disco. Maybe it’s more helpful if we tell you that they’re big mates with Hot Chip and that they went down a storm when they toured with Chvrches last year (check out the exclusive tour diary they made for us here). Oh, and they’ve signed a record deal with the truly amazing Sup-Pop label (home to Fleet Foxes & Goat!). Get down to the Thumpers beat with a sample of their yet-to-be-released debut album right HERE.

Dan Croll

Dan-Croll 2014 - 600

You are looking at a one-man pop machine – Dan Croll can do it all! Sing, keyboards, guitar, key-tar, synth drums – it’s all the same to our Dan. Behind that Clarke Kent exterior is a fella with a musical arsenal which is sure to be the soundtrack of 2014. Aged only 18 Dan enrolled in the Paul McCartney backed Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and what emerged is a glorious mixture of Vampire Weekend & Paul Simon Afro-beat combined with lavish helpings of future-folk a la Bon Iver. Unapologetically romantic, Dan’s already presided over marriage proposals at his early gigs so prepare to be swept off your feet as you sample the video for the beautiful “Home” right HERE.

Chloe Howl

Chloe-Howl-large 600

Listen, do NOT mess with Chole Howl, right? She simply will not be bullshat – her words. She’s got the kick-ass tunes to back up the attitude mind, and they are dripping with the high quality pop hooks you’d expect from the likes of Lilly Allen, Ladyhawke and Kate Nash. No topic’s off-limits for Ms Howl – mean girls, flaky boyfriends – they all get the some treatment – f**k U! And does this girl know how to wear a pair of DMs in style? She certainly does. Enough talk, listen to and download her Rumour EP for FREE right HERE.
