With her new record “Honest Life” Courtney Marie Andrews has written an album which puts her amongst the greats of contemporary country alongside Iris Dement, Laura Cantrell and Caitlin Rose.
There’s a pathos in country music that you just don’t get anywhere else. All the big names are great exponents of it, but it’s the ladies of country who are the big heart breakers and Courtney Marie Andrews is the latest to carry on that grand tradition. Listen to the album on Spotify below.
This is Courtney’s 6th record and it’s testament to her longevity as a songwriter. There’s a great 70’s feel to the record reminiscent of classic John Prine albums but there’s also a smattering of “Blue” era Joni Mitchell on tracks like “Let The Good One Go”. There’s a few real highlights across the album ; “Table for One” is an ode to the illusion of freedom provided by life on the road while “How Quickly Your Heart Mends” is a forthright break-up song but both are solid drinking numbers.
