Playlist: LIFE

Hull's finest LIFE are playing shows right across the UK over the next couple of months so we got them to make us a list of the tracks that will be receiving some heavy rotation on their tour bus.

Off the back of some stellar performances at this year’s Live At Leeds & The Great Escape Festival; Yorkshire’s most erudite punks LIFE are set to release their new single “Grown Up” out on the 15th June. It’s the first single to be taken from what will be the follow up to their amazing debut long player “Popular Music” and it’s another pounding slice of muscular indie-rock blended with their dry-witted social commentary. Take a listen below…

Amongst this hive of activity frontman Mez still found time to pick out a choice selection of songs that have inspired the band and that are likely to be dominating the car stereo as they tour the length and breadth of the country.

Mountain Energy – The Fall

Mark E. Smith was a god. He was GOD. His lyrics and unique catalogue of acidic and genre-defining post-punk for me is pint-and-blood stained sacred text that I use as a template for my life.

Miami – Baxter Dury

Baxter’s album ‘Prince of Tears’ was easily my favourite of last year. The lyrics on this cut are riper than a peach that’s been bruised for bare days. The music hits my spot and the delivery simply turns me on.  I’d love for LIFE to play shows with Baxter. Fucking mint.

Jack in Titanic – Bodega

At SXSW I heard Bodega for the first time. Lammo was playing ‘How did this happen!” prior to our BBC 6 Music interview. It screamed tuna; I guess they sound a bit like Parquet Courts which in my book is well tasty. This is a new one which has just been dropped by the band. I like the cheeky wordplay. Plus Jack from Titanic was like a major crush for my Nan in 97’.

Maidenhead – Protomartyr

The best band on the planet at the moment, live its like watching a band being conducted by your favourite uncle. JUST WORLD CLASS.

Whitney Houston and I – Insecure Men

This song has some morbid content. I like it. Also it feels /sounds like porch music (in totally a badass way). I can imagine seeing the night drain as this plays out; getting kinky with the insects that buzz around the fucking porch light.

Kutcher – Sports Team

New in the mix, but I’m digging the vibes big time. I hope to see them live soon.

Babies – Pulp

Can’t have a playlist that forgets to include Pulp – one of the greatest bands to have made music. Jarvis, just like Mark E. Smith, is God. The man has everything – style, dancing ability and dry wit. He is an observational and lyrical genius. The romance buried in their music is what music should be about.
