George The Poet is the moniker of George Mpanga, the Cambridge educated rapper – not your stereotypical story, but George isn’t your stereotypical rapper either. Hailing from Harlseden, North West London, George believes that rappers can have a negative impact on the people who listen to them, so he’s doing his bit to cover real issues in the hopes of changing this generation’s views on what rapping means. Passionate and articulate, Mpanga graduated from Cambridge University after studying Politics, Psychology and Sociology. After realising that rap and grime wouldn’t translate to his new found audience at the uni, he decided to turn his raps into spoken word poetry. His poem, My City, was a firm favourite over the Olympics
More recently, George The Poet was longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2015 and shortlisted for the Brit Awards’ infamous Critic’s Choice award, missing out to James Bay, but it’s still an accolade all the same. And now George finds himself being tipped as one of our Ones to Watch, and we’re pretty certain of big things for this chap!
