One of the most interesting things to do when talking to musicians is to try and gauge their influences outside of music. Anyone can list their favourite bands, but it’s when you dig a little deeper into their personality you discover what makes them great. When WE-ARE-Z’s latest press release hit my inbox, it immediately piqued my interest before I’d even heard a single note of music.
Citing influences outside of music such as Philippe Petit, the famous high wire artist who walked across the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center, and the art of Caravaggio, WE-ARE-Z write quirky pop music that they describe as ‘wonk-pop’ and it’s hard to think of a better term to describe what the London 5 piece do. Latest track ‘Easy’ is a gem of a pop song. It’s supremely catchy, thrilling and the lyrics are as sharp as a blade. Listen below and see what you think.

Of course there are musical influences in the band’s work as well and they’re there for all to see. The band cite artists such as Devo, Talking Heads and Blur as inspiration and there’s definitely a hint of The Cure in there too. The band have a diverse musical history, Bassist Archie has worked in production with James Morrison, Pharrell Williams and The Waterboys. Frontman of the group Gabby performed in desert festivals in California and worked with Brazilian Hip Hop artists in Montreal and New York.
Sure to be an absolute riot live, WE-ARE-Z have a show coming up at The Garage, London on 23 Feb. You can get tickets at www.ticketweb.co.uk/wearez
