New Music: Sugarmen

New Wave influenced Mersey 4-piece re-defining what indie music means in 2016…

Hot on the heels of TicketWeb Ones To watch 2016 Blossoms come Liverpool’s Sugarmen – another band from the North-West challenging the definition of what indie-music means in 2016. Just don’t call it a scene, alright!

The psychedelic “Plastic Ocean” is a great place to start…

The band are made up of (Luke Fenlon (vocals/guitar), Chay Heney (guitars), Tom Shields (bass) and Sam McVann (drums). Taking their  name from the Sixto Rodriguez song Sugar Man they were recently signed to Warners by the A&R legend Seymour Stein. Cheers to Kevin Sampson for documenting the moment in such a wonderful filter.

Of course, Seymour’s previous signatories include the likes of Talking Heads, Madona, The Smiths & another of our new faves The Lottery Winners. You can hear all of those influences within their early output, well okay, not The Lottery Winners.

Debut single “Dirt” was produced in Paul Weller’s studio by The Clash’s Mick Jones who also gave them a nice little shout in MOJO the other day…

It also includes the wonderfully prophetic opening line “You get what you deserve…”.  Have a listen below…

They’ve already shared stages with Sleaford Mods, Hooton Tennis Club, Deer Hunter, Metronomy and British Sea Power as well two Hyde Park shows with Blur and The Who. We’ve already caught ’em twice this year, first when they played our stage at SXSW and later this year when they played their home festival Liverpool Sound City. Check out some footage from their main-stage performance courtesy of  Charly Concerts below…

There’s something a little glorious Glasgow Postcard post-punk about the Liverpool band with squeezes of Orange Juice here and there. There used to be a time when the whole of New York’s post-punks looked to these shores for inspiration. Who knows, it could happen again…
