New Music: Spring King

It is bloody freezing at the moment in London. Here is an introduction to Spring King, whose brand of surfer inspired indie rock is sure to warm you up.

Coming from a city where the skies are usually grey it’s surprising that Spring King sound like they do. When the chorus hits on ‘Who Are you?’ the band sounds decidedly more Malibu than Manchester, which is by no means a bad thing. Spring King provide the kind of escapism from real life that most bands will never achieve. Close your eyes while listening to the garage rock upstarts and you’re transported to summer days, t-shirts, music festivals and sitting around a bonfire with your best friends. This kind of California daydreaming provides a much-needed relief to a country that has been battered by relentless storms and flooding in recent months.

Spring King made headlines last year when Zane Lowe gave the band massive kudos by choosing to play the excellent track ‘City’ as the first ever song on Beats1, Apple’s new radio service. The tune, taken from the bands ‘They’re Coming After You’ EP blends dirty fuzzy guitars with a chorus that’s catchier than a Venus flytrap. If the decision by Zane to open his radio show with relative unknowns raised a few eyebrows, you can guarantee that within 60 seconds of the track they were lowered again. Spring King have been a regular feature on Beats 1 ever since.

Spring King are midway through a UK tour with most of the dates selling out. They’ve inked a deal with Island Records and just dropped their first single to come out on the legendary label. The high energy ‘Rectifier’ was recorded and produced by the bands own Tarek Musa and you can listen to it below.
