New Music: ShitKid

Allow me to introduce you to Shitkid; a one-woman alternative music project created and fronted by Swedish singer-songwriter Åsa Söderquist.

Things have started to take shape for the 23-year-old this year, ShitKid has an interesting past. When Söderquist was 16 she moved to Gothenburg from her hometown in North Sweden and formed a feminist punk band with two friends. She overcame shyness and stage fright in her early life and after recording a few solo tracks at home using Garage Band, uploaded them to Soundcloud and left it at that. Söderquist pursued other projects but the world wasn’t going to let ShitKid stop.

PNKSLM Recordings; the unique Swedish record label who specialise in alternative artists signed her and ShitKid released her debut single “Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid” this year. Listen to the energetic expression of youth below:

This big single came before the self-titled EP released in July. ShitKid has been turning heads despite being at such an early stage in her career. All of her music available online has been released this year, she is still crafting her live performance and her tracks are far from polished… but that’s the most endearing thing about her. As if her self-selected name wasn’t enough to give it away, ShitKid does things differently to other 23-year-old solo artists and that’s the point. Check out another single from her EP ‘666’ which Pigeons & Planes called “sloppy, Lo-Fi perfection”.
