Take some quality new-wave electronic music, add in a passion for percussion and some Caribbean flavourings and you’re left with Poté; a St. Lucian-born, London-bred 22-year-old DJ.
This guy has started his career off on the right foot, having only been on the dance music radar for just over a year. Poté’s new single “Katz” has seen a massive amount of airtime on Radio 1 with numerous plays from Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Toddla T, Monki & Mistajam. The song climbed to number one on Radio 1’s dance chart. Throw it on there, but be warned you will have an uncontrollable urge to party once you hit play.
Breaking into the music industry and becoming relevant in the popular scene is a huge task regardless of genre. There are definitely different approaches to this challenge and there really isn’t any “right” answer for how to make it. Poté produced an EP and released it for free. A huge part of being discovered as an electronic artist is having multiple songs and remixes available for free online. As long as the production is good and the sound has some unique qualities one might just be able to sit back and let the internet do its thang.
This is the method Poté had some success with as he released his free Onyx EP last year and was picked up by the right tastemakers including; Annie Mac, Phil Taggart, Jamz Supernova and Nina Las Vegas, getting plays across BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Triple J. It’s very important to keep this momentum rolling as a brand new electronic artist, radio plays can only help you so much, Poté made a great transition into 2016 by slightly varying his output while staying true to his sound. He kicked off 2016 with this remix of Laura Mvula’s “Phenomenal Woman”:
There is a bit of hype behind him now with top-tier DJs Artwork, Breakage, Buraka Som Sistema’s Branko, B.Traits & Monki being vocal in their support for Poté’s music. Poté’s love for drum and percussion work and his tropical influences merged with life in hectic London make for an enthralling sound and have allowed him to be noticed in the Dance realm.
