New Music: Dua Lipa

The people who brought you Lana del Rey present Dua Lipa, a former model from London via Kosovo now producing Dark-pop / neo-soul club classics – oh, and her first name means “love” in Albanian – we are smitten.

If you never heard Dua’s ‘Be The One’ when it came out last summer then listen to it now! The Track features the knob-twiddling skills of Digital Farm Animals as well as Dua’s incredible vocals.

The singer toured the UK in early 2016 and it was by all means a bloody great success. The shows were absolutely rammed and received rave reviews by those who attended. We had a contingent at the London date and team TicketWeb were blown away by the stage presence of the pop star in the making.

One of the most charming things about Dua Lipa is her ability to take on other artists songs and put her own twist on them. She dipped her toe into the world of posting music online with covers of tracks such as Rihanna’s mega hit ‘Stay’ and a wonderful reworking of Chance The Rapper’s ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’. The experience of turning an established hit came handy when Dua performed for Radio 1 in their Live Lounge, covering The Weeknd’s dirty Rnb number ‘The Hills’.

Her newest single ‘Last Dance’ (so new it hasn’t got an official video yet) is another triumph. The lyrics, aimed directly at a lover who is thousands of miles away, are sharp and will surely resonate with a generation of fans young and not quite so young.

It looks like 2016 is gonna be a good ‘un for the Londoner. An album is surely in production and if the rest of the songs can live up to what she’s released so far, it could be one of the most anticipated pop debuts of the year. She’ll also be headlining her biggest London headline show to date at Heaven, and hopefully we’ll catch her at many a festival this summer.
