New Music: Bruce O Yates

Singer-songwriter influenced by the works of Homer…not that Homer you peanut!

Bruce O Yates is an artist immersed in the classics of rock & literature. His debut E.P. (which was released on Handsome Dad Records last September) features 4 tracks inspired by the tales taken from The Odyssey. It’s not hard to see why, pop music is the perfect vehicle for mythology as Bruce explains himself “Reading the Odyssey I realised that rock n roll shares so much common ground with the classics; the themes of the rambling/abandoning bluesman are identical to those of the heroes from Homer”.

For a sample, watch the “Nothing Compares to You” inspired  to video for the track Helen right now…

There’s also a “classic” element to the music and it’s a mature departure from Bruce’s previous work as part of West-London indie-band Famy.  The Line Of Best Fit called it when they described O Yates’ “Christopher Owens meets Tobias Jesso Jr.-style delivery”. The track “Sisyphus (Rock to Roll)” which premiered on Pigeons & Planes last year also has a real True Blue era Dirty Beaches feel. Check it out below…

Having played with Jerkcurb & Puma Blue at the Shacklewells Arms last year  as well as a performance at taste-maker festival In The Woods; Bruce is now embarking upon his first headline shows starting with a FREE showcase gig at The Montague in New Cross on the 26th of Jan for our always excellent mates at Eat Your Own Ears.
