Introducing: Vels Trio

Vels Trio are making waves with their modern take on experimental Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop laden heavy grooves.

London based instrumental band Vels Trio is the gelling of three distinct musical voices. Jack Stephenson-Oliver on keys/synth, Cameron Dawson on bass and drummer, Dougal Taylor. They have been together since 2014 and developed their sound over a number of years releasing their critically acclaimed first ep Yellow Ochre in 2017.

The Sound

Hard to pigeonhole, the band are leading heads of the nascent UK jazz scene. With a keen desire in improvisation, Vels Trio’s sound can be characterised by their heavy grooves, emotionally charged songwriting, coupled alongside expressive, progressive modern musicianship to create an excitingly frenetic, and irresistibly engaging live sound structures. Being indistinguishable from any sole genre, the band’s mutual loves and individual fortes across prog, electronic, jazz, funk and hip-hop has paved the collective way for their early sound.

The Story

The trio formed in Brighton where discovering their shared passions for bands such as Camel, Gentle Giant, and Mahavishnu Orchestra first brought them together. After three years of playing together, improvising and writing, they released their first record ‘Yellow Ochre’ on Total Refreshment Records, a label at the heart of Londons thriving music scene.
The band have spent the last 3 years developing their sound and honing their live act in preparation to hit the road. A string of live dates in 2017 and an epic live performance on Boiler Room has gained them a diverse array of fans and admirers alike, engaging with the ever-growing ‘generation now’ of curious, broadminded and savvy music lovers and gaining support from future music heavyweight Gilles Peterson who has featured the band in the Brownswood basement.
