Introducing: Raleigh Ritchie

We’ll get this bit of out the way first, because it took up a good 45 minutes in the office before any of us had the sense to look it up on Google – in his own words, it’s “Raleigh like ballet, Ritchie like Lionel”, so that’s that. The name is an amalgamation of his two favourite characters from The Royal Tenenbaums – Raleigh St. Clair and Richie Tenenbaum – his real name is the rather normal sounding Jacob Anderson.

With three EPs already under his belt (including a remix EP from none other than The Internet of Odd Future fame), countless festival appearances including Wireless and Reading and support slots with Kendrick Lamar and Angel Haze, things have already been quite exciting for Raleigh. He featured on Plan B’s I Need Love a few years ago under his real name and arguably stole the show. Lily Allen even covered his track in Radio 1’s Live Lounge. LILY ALLEN! Is it all starting to add up now?

In terms of sound, Ritchie effortlessly straddles genres across the ‘Urban’ umbrella – think electronic RnB, soulful vocals, honest lyrics and some rapping to boot. Keen not to pigeonhole himself, Raleigh says, “If I say ‘I’m an R&B artist’ there will be R&B fans that listen to my stuff and go ‘no you’re not, what’s going on?’ If I say I’m an alternative artist then there will be people who like the Maccabees who will go ‘what the fuck is this?’ I know what my kind of music is I just don’t know what to call it. I think I’m made up of all of the things I love, all the types of music I love.” And we have to say, we love it too.

Raleigh is gearing up for his own headline UK tour and the good news is that all you need to do is head here to sign up! Easy peasy!
