6 Bands that were the buzz of New York’s CMJ 2014

If you’ve not heard of CMJ, then imagine if The Great Escape was transported from Brighton all the way to New York City! Like it’s counter-part in little old blighty it’s all about seeing brand spanking new bands performing in some awesome little venues. Gigs start at midday and they don’t end until the wee hours so you can imagine, there’s quite a few things to see. With that in mind here are the 6 bands that were the the buzz of CMJ 2014

Ryn Weaver

If they did hand out a prize for CMJ buzz then Ryn Weaver would likely take it for 2014. We squeezed ourselves into her gig at The Bowery Ballroom and Ryn kicked off a night so awesome we had to go back the day after to claim our passports. Since Ryn dropped the amazing OctaHate the internet has gone nuts (all of it). With an address book that includes Benny Blanco, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos, Charli XCX and Norwegian DJ/producer Cashmere Cat everything is pointing to Ryn Weaver‘s star going supernova. Watch out Bey.

Little May

little may 2014 - 600 200

Little May is made up of Liz Drummond, Hannah Field, Annie Hamilton, and these 3 were definitely one of the toasts of CMJ 2014. Their blissed out blend of euphoric folk had a bevvy of UK industry types shadowing them around their numerous gigs. If you reckon you’d enjoy a female vocals Arcade Fire or Mumford and Sons then you’re gonna love this. We do BTW.

Circa Waves

Circa Waves 2014 - 600 200

It’s not all about the girls, you know! Circa Waves seemed to pop up at every venue we stepped into and blow the whole room away like they were a home-town crowd. Liverpool’s Kieran, Sian, Sam and Joe were another bunch attracting a lot of attention from the well initiated UK music industry mob. The Strokes, The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys – these guys have got flavours of all the above combined with an explosive nature that is all their own. Scousers rock!

Zella Day

zella day 2014 - 600 200

We’d been tipped off about Zella Day before we flew to New York so you might say that our expectations were high. We were not disappointed. We’d heard her described as a happier Lana Del Rey but there’s much more going on than just that. Stylistically Zella’s got a hippy-chic thing going on (strong look) and musically you need to expect some big hooks.

Girlpool

Girlpool 2014 - 600 200

Some of these kids are so slick, so it’s cool when you hear some good old lo-fi indie. Girlpool’s Cleo and Harmony are worthy pretenders to Violent Femmes acoustic-punk crown or even an gnarley L.A. version of First Aid Kit. Signed to Wichita their debut EP comes out in the UK on November 17th. In the meantime check out some great live footage taken from this year’s CMJ courtesy of unARTigNYC

Ming City Rockers

TicketWeb saw these guys at at amazing place called Fat Baby right in the basement (we’re the bar receipt to prove it). If you want to get involved in some classic Ramones via Iggy and the Stooges punk rock action with a healthy side-dish of  heavy metal then Ming City Rockers are your people. We were also involved in some inter-song crowd mingling from bass player Jakki Walsh. Amazing stuff.
