Ahead of their headliner set for Live Nation Source at the Lock Tavern, Camden Town on Wednesday 12th April, we caught up with Strangler’s obsessive and lead singer of Dalston’s SHINERS, Mr Jamie Delaney to talk all things Britwave, hidden gem drinking holes and the best places to find new music.
Hey Jamie, Describe your sound in 3 words.
Britwave Skint Punk
Where are you from and can you tell us something interesting/something people should check out about your hometown?
It’s London! There are more interesting things here than I could write down. But if I had to say something interesting; there’s this cool little place in Soho called ‘Everisto’ which we have been using for years. It’s not one of those ‘secret’ bars which aren’t actually a secret because they are all over the internet, but an actual bar which very few people know about. You can find us in there in the early hours of the morning from time to time!
What’s your favourite venue you’ve played and why?
The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington is probably our favourite. We’ve done two headline shows there which have been sold out so amazing nights for us. It’s also our local venue I guess and it’s nice to feel at home, right? Someday though I want SHINERS to play Brixton Academy, it’s iconic and I caught our favourite group of all time The Stranglers playing there a few weeks ago. Great show, two-day hangover.
Where do you discover new music?
Facebook? There’s always loads of friends posting about their new bands or friends bands, or a band their friend played them. Aside from that probably Lammo on BBC6 in the afternoons when I should be working.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever got for free?
Outside of music who is your all time hero?
Dirk Bogarde. Incredible actor and style icon.
What can people expect from your source set?
It’s going to be hot, sweaty and fast. We love playing The Lock Tavern for this reason so be prepared for maximum SHINERS.
Any pre-gig rituals?
In descending order of least healthy to most healthy – keyboard John likes to eat a bowl of chips (ideally with truffle), bass player Rory listens to his favourite Nirvana tape, I smoke a cigarette and drummer Lenny has a glass of water.
If you won £1000 on a scratch card what would you spend it?
Credit Card (sadly)
Apart from playing shows, what’s your favourite thing to do Camden?
Obviously drinking in the Camden Head because the manager is just so great. Plug plug.
