Interview: Deer Tick

We chat to Deer Tick's John McCauley about life on the road...

Alternative rockers Deer Tick are in Europe at the moment promoting their excellent double album Deer Tick Vo.1 & Vol.2. We had a quick catch up with lead vocalist and guitarist John McCauley to discuss life on the road and what the band enjoy most about coming to the UK…

Can you tell us where in the world you are right now and what youre up to?

John McCauley: We are at a pub in Earl’s Court in London. I’m drinking a porter.

Youre coming to the UK this monthwhat can fans expect from these shows?

JM: We’re opening up for ourselves, doing a short acoustic set heavy on the Vol. 1 jams. After that we’ll hit the stage with our electric guitars and do a concise, career-spanning set.

Apart from playing showswhat are your favourite things to do in the UK?

JM: I enjoy eating breakfast. Americans really need to incorporate Heinz beans into their breakfast.

Which country in the world would you most like to tour in and why?

JM: Japan, Greenland, South Africa, the list goes on. I’d like to somehow figure out a way to play a show down in Antartica, too.

How has touring changed since you first started?

JM: No more road atlases.

Apart from the essentials (passport, instruments etc) what is one thing you absolutely have to bring on tour with you?

JM: Besides a bunch of books I also brought my Nintendo Switch.

If someone was visiting Providence for the first time for only 24 hours, how should they spend their day?

JM: Eat hot wieners from Olneyville New York System. Go to the RISD Museum. Check out AS220. Get a beer at Muldowney’s.

Best hot wieners in RI.

We love your new albums Vol.1 and Vol.2. Were you apprehensive at all about releasing such a large body of work in one go?

JM: Thanks. No, not at all. I was excited to put it all out at once. It’s only 20 songs total, and neither album is super long. It was fun to separate the material the way that we did.

Can you recommend us one song that we should go and listen to immediately?

JM: “Crayon Angels” by Judee Sill
