One of the most disappointing things (and frustratingly not at all surprising) about the recent Brit Award nominations is the lack of hip-hop representation. UK hip-hop is in a very healthy state right now and with artists such as Skepta, Krept & Konan and Big Narstie all crossing into the mainstream it deserves to be celebrated. Looking to make his mark and join the elite of UK rappers mentioned is South London’s Yungen, and he’s off to a good start.
Part of the Play Dirty collective, the 23 year old has been making waves over the past few years with a string of increasingly impressive tracks including collaborations with Krept & Konan and Sneakbo. He’s also been dropping covers regularly his own take on tracks such as Tyga’s ‘Rack City’ and Drakes’s huge hit ‘0 to 100’. After racking up millions of YouTube views the rapper inked a deal with Sony’s RCA imprint.
Latest track ‘Comfy’ might just be Yungen’s best work to date. The lyrics are witty and sharp while remaining hard. He doesn’t shy away from taking aim at those who have criticised him for not deserving a MOBO nomination, where he earned a nod for best newcomer. The production from Harry James (Ed Sheeran, Sway) is also on point.
It looks like Yungen is going to make waves this year. 1Xtra named him in their ‘Hot For 2016’ list and Charlie Sloth is a big supporter. If he carries on the way he’s going, Yungen could well be on his way to achieving something special.
Yungen performs at Village Underground, London 25 April. Tickets available at www.ticketweb.co.uk/yungen
