Imagine if Beck & The Flaming Lips lived in Bath, were pretty into Britpop and had a bit of a fascination with death – that’s Bad Sounds. Fear not it’s a proper party!
Bad Sounds is made up of songwriting brothers Ewan (keyboards, vocals) & Callum Merrett (vocals) plus Sam Hunt (bass), Charlie Pitt (guitar) & Olivia Dimery (drums). All based in Bath. Ah Bath, lovely.
DIY Mag call it “Woozy Pop”, The Line Of Best Fit call out “the adventurous pop sensibilities of Bombay Bicycle Club with the funky leanings of Jungle”. Whatever you call it, there’s a healthy smattering of Blur’s Parklife-era caricature stories mixed with some heady influences from the 70s. The aforementioned Beck is a publicly confessed source of inspiration for the brothers Merret which they attribute to their Dad forever playing Odelay.
The Bad in Bad Sounds is a Michael Jackson sort of Bad, meaning it’s good. The band have been together for a few years now but they had a bit of a break last year when Avalanche was released on Killing Moon Records. Annie Mac (her off the radio) made it her the tune of the week. She then went on to book in “Wages” for a prime slot on her next show before it had even been properly mastered.
