What?: Camden Crawl 2014
Where?: Camden, North London (obvs)
Camden Crawl is, without question, the original urban festival. No sitting in a bus for hours on end to reach the hallowed British countryside – this is right on the capital’s doorstep. The Camden Crawl was born nearly 20 years ago against the backdrop of Britpop era. Back then the shin-dig was made up of just 5 venues. It got a bit crowded that year so sensibly the festival has expanded over the years and now it takes in the whole smorgasbord of great venues that Camden has to offer including the Barfly, KOKO, Dingwalls, the Jazz Cafe, Proud and Underworld! Take a look on the map here.
Throughout it’s history the Camden Crawl has remained a veritable magnet for the music fan who’s in to the fresh stuff, first! On the ‘Crawl, you’re going to see some bands that you’ve never heard before, and 6-months later, they are going to be massive. Florence & The Machine, Django Django, Bastille – these guys have all packed out tiny rooms at past ‘Crawls – and look at ’em now!
There are a few ‘Crawl debutantes we reckon could be well on their way to similar stratospheric success later this year. PAWS have been on our radar for a little while now and if you are into catchy as hell punk (a la Dookie era Green Day) then they should be on your radar too. Electro-pop genii Thumpers are another band that made some impressive ones-to-watch lists earlier in the year. With their debut album just released, expect some big crowds around their shows.
Paws – Live on KXEP
Sitting beside these fresh faced newcomers are some stone cold indie royalty too. Of Montreal, Au Revoir Simone,Yuck, Atari Teenage Riot, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Big Deal and Jeffrey Lewis are all in residence. With a line-up this extensive you’re going to want to do some audio research beforehand. Thankfully, the guys at Camden Crawl have put together an official mixtape which you can download FREE from 7Digital (or listen now below).
As well as bands there also a tidy line-up of comedy and other fun stuff. One of our favourite things at this year’s crawl apart from the bands is going to be Sounds Familiar – it’s a music quiz to beat all other music quizes – MC Quizical rules!
How do they do it you might ask? How do they pan for musical gold and come up trumps year after year? The answer lies in the highly impressive list of curators, made up of the nation’s most music savvy promoters and blogs, who help put the festival together each year. This motley crew of impresarios get together and fight it out to decide which bands will be playing under their banner. The taste makers involved making sure the line-up for 2014 is right on the money includes Bird On The Wire, Rockfeedback, Moshi Moshi, Paint It Black, DIY, The 405, Drowned In Sound, London In Stereo and The Line Of Best Fit. You’re in good hands.
